Book Description: Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King’s Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world….
But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others–a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords. . .
First Line: “The day was grey and bitter cold, and the dogs would not take the scent.”
What a book. WHAT A BOOK! I am just blown away by how much Martin can bring to the table with his writing style, his story, his plot twists. He sucks you in to the point where you can’t get enough and then he breaks your heart in a few words. And let me tell you for all those fans who are starting on their SOS journey, be prepared for tears. There are many surprising deaths in this book that left me staring at the pages in amazement and denial. Unlike the first two books there was not a boring chapter in this book. Every thing ended with a cliffhanger making you read faster so you could see what happen next (and often times you won’t get back to that character for another 100 pages or so). So many things happened in this book and I’m still reeling from what I read.
I loved seeing the characters develop so much from where they were before, Jaime in particular has changed drastically. Before I didn’t like his character and now I’m rooting him on. There are a few new players in the game of thrones and I am excited to read what happens next. SOS is definitely my favorite of the series so far, and even though it took me months to read it, I loved every minute of it. I am still amazed that even if I put the book down for three weeks I can easily pick it up and start reading again. It is so easy to fall into the world of Westeros and Easteros. Now to go read book four.
